82 hours of instruction by three music educators in fun yet challenging rehearsals
Individualized music theory and aural skill classes; girls are assessed and advanced once mastery achieved; instruction is sequential and comprehensive
A minimum of 3 performances in beautiful venues and locations around Birmingham
Multiple community events/performances showcasing all choirs
Rehearsal materials (music, binders, audio recordings) for choristers to practice at home
Leadership opportunities for older girls to become section leaders and peer leaders for younger choristers
Measureable Results
1. Music Reading
Weekly theory classes teach singers music notation, rhythm, and how to navigate a musical score
Girls are taught with a sequential, comprehensive curriculum that allows individual progress and mastery with written assessments on each level
Mastery allows for advancement into more challenging choirs
2. Aural Skills
Solfege & Kodály system used to teach all levels of aural ability
Choristers develop aural skills by group and individual instruction
Weekly instruction of sight-reading, intervals, and harmonic recognition
3. Confidence, Composure and Poise
Prelude choir (K-3rd grade) teaching stage presence, concert etiquette, and how to remain composed on stage during a concert
Girls learn to have confidence in their own singing and performance in the safety of a group environmentEvery singer is equally valued, needed, and responsible
Girls experience the joy of being a part of something bigger than themselves
As girls perform, they find worth and value in the beauty of the song
Performance anxiety lessens as girls share the stage with friends

4. Consideration
Birmingham Girls Choir staff teaches girls to be respectful and thoughtful of others
Girls are challenged to find meaning in the texts/lyrics and thoughtfully approach the performance nuances of every song
Collaborative concerts with choirs from other countries expose girls to other cultures and learn about the world
Multi-cultural songs introduce singers to places around the world and allow them to thoughtfully consider these places and societies through their music
5. Commitment to Excellence
Birmingham Girls Choir performs high-quality choral music and engages singers in rehearsals that challenge and grow their musical ability and focus
Rehearsals are safe learning environments that allow girls to excel in maturity of choral tone, balance, intonation, diction, and musicality
Birmingham Girls Choir has performed in national festivals, state conferences, operas, and ballets
6. Accountability & Leadership
Birmingham Girls Choir requires singers to maintain a music binder, rehearse at home with tracks, give 100% in each rehearsal, and learn/study music theory
As girls advance in musicianship, they become mentors to younger singers, helping them to master concepts and aural skills
Girls are tasked to speak at concerts, reading text and often introducing songs
Girls are allowed to individually audition for solos and small ensemble performances
7. Community & Relations
Birmingham Girls Choir performs annually throughout the city: nursing homes, hospitals, seasonal events, and churches
Birmingham Girls Choir has performed National Anthem at Barons baseball games, Samford and UAB baseball games, UA gymnastics meets, and the Harlem Globetrotters game in B’ham
Birmingham Girls Choir performs collaborative concerts with B’ham Boys Choir and other regional choirs/arts organizations in our area
Birmingham Girls Choir started first satellite rehearsal in North Jefferson county to service girls in that area, with hopes of expanding to inner city schools and satellites around the city
